LG TV model numbers explained, Understanding what LG TV model numbers mean

Examples of LG Model numbers are used below to explain the meaning LG Model numbering system. In order to understand how LG Model numbering system works we explain the logic behind LG's Model numbering system. So let us take the following examples of LG Model Numbers:

  • LG Model: 65LA9700 which is a 65" Ultra High Definition 4K TV or UHDTV with resolution of 3840 x 2160
  • LG Model: 55EA9800 which is a 55" Curved OLED Smart TV with 3D
  • LG Model: 42GA6400 which is a 42" 3D 1080p LED TV with Google TV

In the examples above, it is clear that the first two places in the LG model number denotes the diagonal width of the TV screen in inches.

The letter following in the third place is the type of TV screen. For example:

  • 'C' stands for LCD TV which now looks to have been discontinued from the LG Range
  • 'E' stands for OLED TV
  • 'G' stands for Google TV enabled
  • 'L' stands for an LED TV
  • 'P' stands for a plasma TV which again seems to be out of fashion.

The next letter following in the fourth place is something to denote the quality of the screen. Three letters 'A', 'M', and 'N' are used for HD resolution of 1920x1080 and higher. These letters in LG models stand for:

  • 'A' stands for high quality picture like ULTRA HIGH DEFINITION 4K TV of resolution of 3840 x 2160. Their OLED TV is given this designation even though it is not a 4K TV but only regular HD resolution of 1920x1080
  • 'M' stands for 3D HDTV
  • 'N' stands for HD resolution of 1920x1080

The first 2 Numbers stands for the diagonal size of the TV screen. The first letter after the initial two numbers is normally a 'P' or an 'L'. The 'P' stands for a Plasma TV. The 'L' stands for the screen type LCD (both LED and LCD TV have same type of LCD screens - it is only the backlight that makes it an LED or an LCD TV as explained in our Page on TV Types).

The second letter stands for the following. We have arrived at these results by studying the LG website comparing the different models. It is not an official LG statement, just our conclusion.

  • B - 2004

The first number after the letters stands for the following: 9 - flagship top of the range series, 8 will be the next best and 7 the next best and so on till you come to the lower numbers 4, 3 and 2 to denote budget series of TV.

Unique features of LG TV

Here below we explain about some of the unique LG TV features like Motion Clarity Index or MCI or Dynamic MCI, LG TVs TruMotion technology and about the unique LG Magic Motion Remote Control.

LG Motion Clarity Index explained, LG Dynamic MCI

LG TV Motion Clarity Index or MCI or Dynamic MCI is a comparative index of how clear fast motion is seen on a TV, the higher the MCI the better the TV is with less blurring in fast moving scenes. The equivalent specs of LGs 'Motion Clarity Index' or MCI in Samsung TV is 'Clear Motion Rate' or CMR, similarly the equivalent specs of LGs 'Motion Clarity Index' or MCI in Sony TV is 'Motionflow XR'. LGs 'Motion Clarity Index' or MCI in Philips TV is 'Perfect Motion Rate' or PMR and in Toshiba TV it is 'Active Motion Rate' or AMR. Panasonic equivalent to LGs Motion Clarity Index MCI is '360 Back Light Scanning' or 360 BLS.

Motion Clarity Index MCI is not the same as  Refresh Rate, but Motion Clarity Index is an indicator of the clarity of high speed motion display, incorporating more than just frame rates. Motion Clarity Index MCI is a value based on the combination of Panel Refresh Rate, Backlight scanning rates (backlight repeatedly turned on and off to reduce motion blur) , Local Dimming, processor speed, etc. and the higher the figure the better the TV is in showing blur less fast motion action scenes. In essence therefore Motion Clarity Index, MCI or Dynamic MCI are a measure of  how good a TV can handle fast moving scenes to avoid motion blur. The higher the Motion Clarity Index number the better.

LG TV TruMotion

LG TVs TruMotion technology is a method by which additional TV pictures are added in between each frame of the TVs natural frame rate of 25 or 50 frames per second in PAL systems and 30 or 60 frames per second in NTSC system. This adding of additional TV pictures between each frame of the TVs natural frame is called 'Motion interpolation' or 'motion smoothing' or ME/MC for motion estimation/motion compensation. The idea behind it is to avoid problems like 'Judder' which is a flickering of TV picture.  'Motion interpolation' with the additional frames added avoids Judder and gives a much smoother fluid picture on the TV screen. LG calls this process of 'Motion interpolation' in their TVs as 'TruMotion'. Lg's TruMotion process goes one step further than competitors 'Motion interpolation' techniques, LG adds Scanning Backlight technology in TruMotion. The Scanning Backlight technology in LG's TruMotion enables blurless judderless pictures.

The equivalent of LG's TruMotion in other TVs are in Samsung TV 'Auto Motion Plus', in Sony TV  'MotionFlow', in Sharp TV 'AquoMotion', in Toshiba TV 'ClearFrame' and in Vizio TV 'Smooth Motion'.

LG Magic Motion Remote Control

A remote control that operates like a mouse. A smart TV is never smart if you have to endure an overly complex process for controlling your TV. The Magic Motion Remote Control provides the easiest control over your LG Smart TV. Just Point, Click, and Control. With simple movements and gestures, you can drag, flick, and select your preferences, without the hassle of using multiple buttons and arrow keys.

LG 2D to 3D conversion

LG's CINEMA 3D provides remarkably improved 2D to 3D conversion function which offers more realistic 3D images.
