Is it worth to buy a new 3D TV

When 3D TVs came out first it was something unique, but people soon realised that 3D movies and other content was very limited. Also the trouble to wear special glasses did not go down well with people. In short the intial craze for 3D TV has died down and at present the demand for 3D TV has almost dissapeared.

3D TV working principle, different types of 3D TV

The basic principle of 3D TV working is that there are 2 images being shown on the TV screen simultaneously, one for the right eye and the other for the left eye. When the viewer sees the two separate images, he thinks that he is seeing a 3D image.

There are 3 different types of 3D TVs. These are 3D TV with active glasses, 3D TV with passive glasses and 3D TV without glasses or Glassless 3D TV. Each of these different types of 3D TV technologies are explained below:

3D TV with active glasses

In a 3D TV with active glasses, the pictures for the right and left eye are shown one after the other. The active 3D glasses for watching 3D TV have electronic shutters that blind vision to one eye while the picture meant for the other eye is on the TV. This process is repeated very fast at a rate of about 60 TV images per second. The left and right side lenses of the active 3D glasses opens and shuts synchronizing with signals emitted by the 3D TV to the 3D glasses.

3D TV with passive glasses

In 3D TV with passive glasses there is a polarising screen on the passive type 3D TV which polarizes the light coming out from the TV image. Thus the light from the images on the passive 3D TV are polarized either horizontally or vertically and the special passive 3D glasses have lenses to see horizontally polarized light in one side, say the left lens and the other right side lens can only see vertically polarized light. Thus each eye gets the correct 3D picture frame through the different polarising effect given to passive 3D TV images. Passive 3D glasses are very reliable unlike the complicated active 3D glasses which require to be powered by batteries to open and close each side of the lens according to signals received from the 3D TV.

Glassless 3D TV called Autostereoscopic 3D TV

The latest in 3D TV technology is Glassless 3D TV or 3D TV Without Glasses. The technical term for 3D TV with no glasses is 'Auto-stereoscopic 3D TV' (stereoscopic 3D-TV is 3D TV with glasses).

At the 2013 CES show in Los Angeles Dolby, the famous Digital Audio technology Company, showed off a Glassless 3D TV with 4k Ultra HD resolution. Dolby's Glassless 3D TV is called 'Multi View Glasses Free 3D'. Dolby announced that they will be releasing under license their 3D Glassless TV technology to the major TV manufacturers. So watch out for a flood of Glassless 3D TVs in the market soon.

Ultra-D glassless 3D TV

We can get a glimpse of the future of 3D TV from the company Ultra-D of Stream TV Networks. Ultra-D 3D TV is a glassless Ultra HD 4k 3D TV which also has the benefit of real-time converting of ordinary TV pictures to 3D on the run. The Huffington Post article "The Remarkable 3D-TV Story You Don't Know" gives an enlightening account of this great 3D TV system. This is what Ultra-D says on their website:

"Ultra-D converts all content (even non-3D) in stunning detail, alleviating complaints of motion sickness, limited viewing angles and the need to be in a “sweet spot” to see images in 3D. And Ultra-D puts viewers in control, with the ability to adjust 3D “pop” and depth to their liking. A room full of people can simultaneously experience Ultra-D’s vibrant no-glasses-required 3D.

Any sense of “gimmicky” looking 3D is eliminated by use of Ultra-D’s patented hardware, middleware and sophisticated-software algorithms, which visually transport viewers of any device into an unrivaled, adjustable real-world 3D experience."

3D Holographic TV or 3D Holo-TV

Holographic TV or Holo-TV will be the new generation of 3D TVs. Companies like Apple, Google, Samsung and Sony are investing heavily in research into Holographic Display Technology with the ultimate aim of producing Holo-3D TVs, Holo-3D mobile phones, etc. In a holographic TV or Holo-TV the images can be projected into the middle of a room and the virtual picture will appear as if out of thin air. Holo-TV images could be viewed from any angle without use of any special glasses.

Health risks watching 3D TV, Does watching 3D TV cause headaches

Does watching 3D TV cause headaches and some other health problems? Some people do experience mild headaches due to eye strain when watching 3D TV movies. But this is not a universal problem. 3D TV manufacturers do caution against young children watching 3D TV, but they issue this warning only to be on the safe side and not because of any finding of harmful health effects of 3D TV. The 3D movies are becoming better in quality and also 3D TVs, so a 3D TV is a good investment, since watching 3D movies are very enjoyable.
