New MicroLED TV from Samsung

Just recently, at the CES 2018 show in January 2018, Samsung unveiled a massive 146 inch TV called 'The Wall' with a new technology called MicroLED.

MicroLED cannot be called a new technology because giant scoreboards with LED bulbs are in use in almost all major football stadiums around the world. What Samsung's achievement with the MicroLED is that they have shrunk the LED bulbs to microsize to serve as individual pixels in a TV.

A TV pixel must contain the 3 RGB colors that make up white light. That means each LED bulb making a pixel must contain 3 colour elements, Red, Green and Blue that can be individually controlled from zero brightness to full brightness. Not an easy task considering the size of each pixel

My guess as to why Samsung displayed such a huge TV, is because they could not make each LED pixel bulb smaller than 0.033 inches square. I arrived at a 0.033-inch pixel size by calculating the number of pixels required to fill a 146 inch 4K (3840x2160 pixels) TV.

So contrary to the rational thinking, the challenge facing Samsung will be to make smaller TVs than the 146 inches giant TV they showed off at CES 2018. To make smaller TVs with 4K resolution, the LED pixel bulbs will have to become smaller and it will be difficult

So I foresee that Samsung will face a challenge to make smaller MicroLED TVs because scaling down each Micro LED will be a tough call for Samsung. Anyway, I hope they can go down to a 65 inch MicroLED TV at an affordable price in the next five years so that I can enjoy this incredible technology.

MicroLED is an Emissive Display Technology like OLED TV with each pixel being a Micro LED bulb containing minute RED Green and Blue LED bulb elements. So MicroLED TVs will be many times brighter than OLED TV and produce equally deep blacks with none of the drawbacks of OLED TVs like 'Burn-in' and degradation of the light output with age. So very soon we can see ultra bright MicroLED TVs with infinite contrast ratios. If successful, MicroLED TVs are the future of TVs.
