How to hear the TV better, How to make TV sound better and clearer

Flat screen TVs have great picture but the sound of TV is not clear or loud enough. This is because the big TV manufacturers' aim is to make the TV as thin and light as possible, and in so doing, compromise on the sound quality of TV, by having just namesake speakers in the new TVs of today. So the only solution to the problem of poor TV sound quality is to add extra speakers to improve sound of TV. We discuss below some of the best ways on how to make TV sound better and clearer with speaking voice sound better with the use of soundbars and home theatre systems with surround sound speakers.

The problem of poor sound quality of new large flat TVs is due to the low power output speakers of about 10 Amps which is fitted to new TVs of today. TV manufacturers expect and recommend that you buy separate sound systems for your TV. One of the least complicated and best way to improve TV sound is with a good soundbar for TV. Another good solution to the problem of poor sounding TV is to have a 5.1 surround sound system called a Home Theatre System. Now with advanced TV soundbars available, many claim that a TV sound bar is better than home theatre for improving sound of TV

TV voices low music loud

One of the commonest problem while watching movies on a TV is that the TV voices are low and the background music very loud. To hear the conversation or talking voices in TV clearly the TV volume is set at high and suddenly an action scene comes and the volume of the TV gets very high disturbing neighbours and waking up the children. This problem becomes even worse when we have surround sound systems with the TV sound amplified. The solution to this problem is DRC or Dynamic Range Control on the TV home theatre surround sound system.

Dynamic Range Control or DRC to make loud sounds quieter and quiet sounds louder

Dynamic Range Control DRC in a TV sound system, makes loud sounds quieter and the quiet sounds louder. With Dynamic Range Control DRC you do not need to be adjusting the volume control all the time, turning up the volume when the sound is low and turning down volume during the loud movie scenes. DRC is a system by which the high and lows of sound signals are controlled so that they are within a certain pre-adjusted range. The low volume sounds are jacked up and the loud sounds are toned down to give an even sound. Certain Media Players like VLC Media Player has inbuilt DRC function. High end audio receivers and amplifiers with Dolby Digital have Dolby Dynamic Range control or DDRC built in. There is also the 'Night Viewing function' which is a sound volume balancing DRC function in most Audio Receivers, amplifiers and sound systems. This built in Night DRC function in Audio receivers and amplifiers are not as good as those in Dolby DRC, because in Dolby DRC the dynamic range control feature is within the codecs of the Dolby Digital recording.

What is a TV Sound-bar and good soundbars for TV

A TV Sound bar is the easiest and best way to get better sound quality when watching TV. Sound bars are simple to install and do not have all the complicated wiring and the many speakers of a surround sound home theatre system.

How Sound bars work is that they have many focused speakers that sends out focused beams of sound, much like beams of light, and these focused beams of sound gets reflected off the walls around you to give the same effect as the 5 surround sound speakers in a 5.1 surround sound system. How TV 5.1 surround sound system works

How the surround sound system works is explained with the help of the above picutere. The components in the 5.1 surround sound home theatre system shown in the above picture are as follows:

Center speaker in 5.1 surround sound system

All the conversation sounds are output from the center speaker which is placed just below in front of the TV. Conversations should be output through the front center speaker just below the TV so that you have the realistic feeling that it is the people in the TV picture that are talking.

Left and Right front speakers in 5.1 surround sound system

These speakers output sounds that come from the left and right sides of a TV picture. Let us take an example of a train moving from left to right in a TV scene.

The sound is higher from the left center speaker when the train is just entering the picture from the left side. As the train moves to the center of the screen, the sound from the front left speaker reduces, the sound from the front center speaker is at the maximum and when the train reaches the right side of the screen, the sound from the front right speaker increases. The train passes across the TV screen in a couple of seconds if moving slowly, or will flash across the screen in a split second if moving slowly. Whatever the speed of the train you get that realistic sound of the train passing across your screen with the sound from the three front speakers responding flawlessly.

Left and Right rear speakers in 5.1 surround sound system

These get into their act when the picture in the TV requires the sound to come from behind. For example in a scene where a man is walking away with his back to you, and in the TV scene someone suddenly yells at him from behind, then that yelling sound will come from the rear speakers and you become so much a part of the scene with the realistic sound from behind you. You have to experience quality surround sound system to really enjoy modern HDTV movies.

Subwoofer in 5.1 surround sound system

This sixth speaker is usually designated as the .1 speaker of the 5.1 or 7.1 surround system. The subwoofer output all the low frequency sounds, like explosions, heavy drums, very deep bass sound of a conversation, etc. Since human ears cannot make out the direction from which the low frequency sound comes from, the sub-woofer can be placed anywhere in the room.
